What is it?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to change the shape, size or functionality of the nose.
It is a surgery that requires careful evaluation by a certified plastic surgeon in order to understand the potential risks and benefits of performing it.
When is it indicated?
Rhinoplasty is indicated for various reasons, both aesthetic and functional. For aesthetic reasons, including hump of the nasal dorsum, deviation of the dorsum, drooping of the nasal tip, bulbous nasal tip, enlargement of the nostrils, enlargement of the middle third of the nose, post-traumatic nose irregularities/deformities, long nose, flat nose, among others. It is also recommended for functional reasons when individuals experience difficulty breathing due to a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse. Additionally, Rhinoplasty is suitable for congenital deformities or those caused by trauma.
How the procedure is performed? What is the difference between closed and open rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can be performed using either an open or closed approach. In the open approach, a small incision is made in the columella, which allows the surgeon to lift the skin and access all the structures of the nose. In the closed approach, incisions are made inside the nostrils.
During the procedure, depending on the desired outcome, the surgeon may remove or reshape cartilage or add cartilage grafts to achieve the intended aesthetic results or improve respiratory function.
What is the difference between Structural and Preservative Rhinoplasty?
Two different approaches are used in Rhinoplasty: Structural and Preservative. Structural Rhinoplasty involves modifying the structure of the nose by molding or removing bone and cartilage to achieve the intended aesthetic and functional results. On the other hand, Preservative Rhinoplasty focuses on more subtle alterations of the nose, aiming to correct them while preserving the anatomical structures of the nose as much as possible. The choice between one technique or the other depends on the specific needs of each patient.
What technology is used?
The consultation process for rhinoplasty involves the use of imaging exams, namely Computed Tomography (CT), to make the correct diagnosis and define the treatment plan. Additionally, we utilize a VectraR three-dimensional imaging system in our consultations, allowing us to plan the surgery and simulate the final result. This tool is valuable for the surgeon and patient to discuss possible outcomes and align expectations.
Can it be combined with other surgeries?
Rhinoplasty can be combined with other body surgeries, such as Mammoplasty, or facial surgeries, such as Blepharoplasty or Otoplasty.
