SURGICAL PROCEDURES BY LIMA

Get answers to all your questions regarding surgical procedures for the face, breasts, and body.

What is it?

Gastrocnemius augmentation, more commonly referred to as calf augmentation, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at enhancing the size and shape of the calf muscles. The gastrocnemius muscle is one of the primary muscles in the calf, contributing significantly to its shape and definition.

This procedure can help individuals achieve a more balanced physique and is particularly popular among those who struggle to develop their calf muscles to their desired size or symmetry through exercise alone.

When is it indicated?

Gastrocnemius augmentation can be beneficial in the following situations:

  • Aesthetic enhancement: For those who desire greater lower leg definition or volume to achieve a more balanced or muscular appearance;

  • Correcting asymmetry or deformities: This can include congenital deformities or asymmetry due to injury or damage to the muscle;

  • Reconstructive purposes: Following trauma or diseases that might have caused muscle loss.

How is the procedure performed?

Gastrocnemius augmentation is typically performed using silicone implants specially designed for the calf muscles. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately one to two hours.

An incision is made in the natural crease behind the knee, and a pocket is created between the fascia (the fibrous covering of the muscle) and the gastrocnemius muscle. The silicone implant is then inserted into this pocket and the incision is closed. The procedure may be performed on one or both legs, depending on the patient's aesthetic goals or the need for correction of asymmetry.

Can it be combined with other surgeries?

Gastrocnemius augmentation can be combined with other procedures as part of a comprehensive body contouring plan. It is often performed in conjunction with other leg contouring procedures, such as thigh lifts or liposuction, to achieve a balanced lower body aesthetic.
