What is it?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that allows you to correct and change the conformation of the ear.
When is it indicated?
The most common reason for consultation is the presence of protruding ears. This deformity can vary in severity and is primarily characterized by a noticeable distance of the ear from the cranial vault. In such cases, an increase in the amount of cartilage in the conchal region and a loss of definition of ear structures, such as the antihelix, are also common.
How is the procedure performed?
Otoplasty is performed through a retroauricular incision, which allows the scar to be hidden behind the ear. This incision provides access to the cartilage. The specific techniques for reshaping, molding, and/or excising the ear cartilage are applied on a case-by-case basis, tailored to the individual patient's needs.
At what age should it be performed?
This surgical procedure can be performed from the age of 5, when the ear has already reached 85% of its development. Nonetheless, this surgery can be performed in adults with excellent aesthetic results.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Otoplasty can be performed under local anesthesia in adults or with general anesthesia in children and patients who do not tolerate or prefer not to undergo a procedure with local anesthesia.
Can it be combined with other surgeries?
Otoplasty can be combined with other surgeries, and it is more commonly combined with facial surgeries such as Rhinoplasty.
